Stay tuned for drop off dates, all this free time on our hands means more time to empty those cupboards of any old vases collecting dust, so get started now! Less clutter in your home and fresh-cut flowers from us = win-win!

Plant of the Month – Shamrock

March is the time for a favourite plant of many, the Shamrock plant. People love to bring in the luck of the Irish for St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th. And this plant is considered quite lucky. The three leaves of the shamrock plant are said to mean faith, love and hope. The fourth leaf on the shamrock is luck! If you find yourself lucky enough to receive one of these plants this year, here are a few quick tips to help you care for them.

Light – bright, but indirect, like most plants the shamrock plants thrive in an east-facing window

Water – it is best to water shamrocks from the bottom, this means letting the plant in its plastic pot sit in about an inch of water for a few minutes to absorb what it needs, this avoids over-watering, always allow the top 2″ of the soil to dry out completely before watering again

Temperature – shamrocks do best in 60 to 70 degrees during the day and 55 to 65 degrees at night, so hot and humid areas are not best for these lovely green plants

Loving Your Anthurium and Jasmine Plants

Known for its heart-shaped blooms, Anthurium is a hearty and beautiful plant that will thrive for years to come if cared for properly. These magnificent plants must be watered weekly, although they should be allowed to dry in between waterings. Yellowing leaves are telltale signs of over-watering. They thrive in high light but not direct sunlight. They need excellent drainage to avoid root rot and be sure to deadhead frequently to allow new blooms to grow and flourish. If the stems appear weak as they grow, feel free to use a stake to keep them upright and grow to their full potential.

Another plant we absolutely love this time of year is Jasmine, as it is one of the best plants to keep in your home for it’s herbal and healing properties. It is proven to reduce stress and tension and lessen the effects of depression. It has notably been used in historic medical treatments for liver disease and keeps the air clean and free of toxins.

These fragrant plants may require a bit of effort, but the results are well worth the work. Dwarf varieties of jasmine make excellent houseplants. They require even moisture and a sunny location in the home. Vines can also be brought into the home and the height is easy to manage with pruning or pinching in the dormant season. Potted plants do not have access to extra nutrients, so they need fertilizing twice annually. Your jasmine plant will flower in late spring into summer and provide the most intoxicating fragrance.

We carry both of these unique and amazing plants in a variety of sizes, call or stop by to find yours!

Tips and Tricks for Hearty Fall Mums

One of the most popular and well-known fall plants is the vivacious fall mum. Make sure your fall mums get at least 6 hours of sunlight and do not let them dry out, this goes for both garden mums and indoor pots as well. Take care not to over-water as soggy soil can prevent them from flowering and cause root rot. The biggest sign of over-watering is yellow leaves that turn black and fall off.

Keep mums evenly watered to ensure the best flowering. It is possible to have annual mums if they are planted in the spring or summer and have ample time to establish a good root system. They can stay in the ground during winter (especially with a layer of mulch for colder areas like ours) if they are cut down to only a few inches above the soil but potted mums should be brought inside and watered to just slightly moist during winter dormancy.

Be sure to deadhead old blooms frequently to encourage new growth and enjoy the beautiful, full look of these marvellous mums!

Garden Advice for Geraniums

Geraniums make decent houseplants if you can provide them with lots of bright light. They like a cool temperature, so even if you keep your thermostat low, they should be happy. However, they’ll start to look gangly and gawky if you don’t provide enough light. There are a few techniques for winterizing geraniums, with or without a pot.

To winterize your beloved geraniums in a dormant storage phase, dig up the entire plant before frost and gently shake the soil from the roots. Place the plants inside open paper bags or hang them upside-down from the rafters in a cool, dark location for the winter.

When saving geraniums for the winter in pots, dig up your geraniums and place them in a pot that can comfortably fit their rootball. Prune the geranium back by one-third. Water the pot thoroughly and place in a cool but well-lit part of your house.
