End of Summer Tips

Don’t forget to deadhead your flowering plants as we approach the new cooler season. Marigolds and zinnias can bloom late summer into early fall if they well taken care of!

Bring in your potted plants before frost hits, but be sure to remove any unwanted intruders like spider mites before they can spread to your indoor plants.

Do I really need flowers at my wedding?

Type in “wedding” to Pinterest and what comes up – hundreds of images of tables with floral garlands, Brides holding beautiful cascading bouquets, seating charts draped with hundreds of flowers, and archways accented with jaw-dropping greenery and floral arrangements. But – do you really need flowers at your wedding?

Flowers don’t last

We won’t lie to you – they won’t last forever. Florists take the best possible care steps to ensure their flowers stay beautiful as long as they can, but the inevitable cannot be stopped. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t worth it! Flowers are the finishing touch to your wedding day. You won’t have your flowers forever (unless you preserve them!) but you will have your pictures forever – and what will you see in your pictures – you, your groom, your most important friends and family, and your flowers! Your wedding bouquet is your once in a life time accessory!

I don’t want flowers at all

Okay, so you want to decorate your reception space with lanterns, candles, glass bottles, wooden pieces, etc. That’s great! No one says each table has to be smothered with massive garlands or 4-foot tall vases! However, the space can start to look very rigid with these as the only item in your centrepieces. A simple touch of greenery scattered on the table or a few flowers arranged in the base of a lantern can very easily soften your reception space. Plus, studies have shown that people enjoy looking at flowers, because they are a natural element they reduce stress and bring happiness to people. Who doesn’t want happy guests on their wedding day?

They cost way too much

Yes, some flowers (specialty flowers, especially out-of-season) do cost a lot! And they will easily eat up your entire budget. But if you approach your florist with your floral dream and explain your budget, they can make suggestions for in-season local flowers that will help you create your dream wedding without going over budget. Nearly every flower has a less expensive substitute that will give the same appearance and not sacrifice cost. But if you’re set on a specific flower, arrangements can be made smaller to accommodate the budget. So don’t let money stop you from completing your wedding floral dream.

At the end of all the planning, the big day will come and go, and you will have your memories and pictures to look back on. Flowers aren’t just a tradition, they are an integral part of your big day. You and your partner have a one-of-a-kind love story, your flowers should be one-of-a-kind too!

Kelly’s Flowers and Gift Boutique is eye-catching florist at Fleurs de Villes competition

Perth has a notable florist in its midst.

Kelly’s Flowers and Gift Boutique, located at Code’s Mill, took part in a prestigious flower competition in Ottawa recently — the Fleurs de Villes, where they earned top marks as the Florist Favourite.

“We were excited to be voted Florist Favourite,” said owner Krista Mackler in an email exchange. “All the participating florists were given a chance to vote for their favourite mannequin and design, and we tied with the most votes! Voting is still happening this week by patrons who stop by the display of all the mannequins.”

The Perth flower shop tied for the most votes with Trillium Floral — a first for the Ottawa show to have a tie.

Fleurs De Villes originated in Paris and was brought to Vancouver, B.C. Kelly’s received an invitation to submit a proposal last fall to be a part of this event, a six-city, cross-Canada tour. “We found out (in) February that our design had been chosen of as one of 15 to participate, representing the City of Ottawa,” Mackler said.

“Upon entering our boutique … the most commonly asked question is, ‘Who is Kelly?’ Well, let us tell you who Kelly really is. Kelly is a woodland fairy from deep in the Ontario woods. She lives in a temperate deciduous forest in Lanark County with maples, hemlock, oak and beech trees which supports 1,200 species of distinctive fauna and flora.

“Our design is a reflection of her woods, in which she calls home. We will be using florals and natural product inspired by the natural beauty of Kelly’s woods such as; roses, fresh mosses, grapevines, bear grass and succulents. We hope to capture the true beauty of Kelly and her home, sweet, home.”

The team spent hours putting Kelly together and Mackler said they couldn’t be more proud of how beautiful she is.

“If you haven’t already, we strongly recommend stopping by Bayshore Shopping Centre this weekend to see the amazing mannequins.”
