How to Store your Bulbs for the Winter Months

To guarantee that your bulbs make it through the winter, its important to make sure they’re stored correctly. We’ve consulted our expert designers, and compiled a list of tips and tricks to make sure that your bulbs make it to the spring.

  1. To prepare for storage, it’s important to let the bulbs and surrounding soil dry, in a sheltered, frost-free place until the soil comes off the roots and leaves them clean. Making sure that the bulb has dried thoroughly before storing is key.
  2. It is important to make sure that your bulbs are stored somewhere safe, and away from frost or any pesky rodents.
  3. When storing, put a layer of sand, peat moss or even newspaper, on the bottom of the container you are using. Then you can add a layer of your bulbs, however, make sure not to let them touch each other. You can then add a second layer or dry material and continue this process until your container is full or all your bulbs have been stored.
Once you’ve completed this process, make sure to store your container in a safe and memorable place for you to access come the spring.

How to take care of your Fall Mums

Fall Mums are a pretty iconic plant during the autumn months. Our Florists have some tricks in their arsenal in order to make sure that your mums look stunning all season long.

  1. Make sure that your fall mums are getting at least 6 hours of sunlight a day.
  2. Don’t let your mums dry out. This trick is for both indoor and outdoor mums.
  3. Try your best to make sure that you don’t overwater your mums. Soggy soil can prevent them from flowering and cause root rot. What to watch for, is yellowing leaves that turn black and fall off.
  4. It is possible to have annual mums if they are planted in the spring or summer and have ample time to establish a good root system. They can stay in the ground during winter (especially with a layer of mulch for colder areas) if they are cut down to only a few inches above the soil. Potted mums should be brought inside and watered to just slightly moist during winter dormancy.
  5. Your final tip is that you should be sure to deadhead old blooms frequently. This help encourages new growth.

We hope you enjoy your amazing fall mums this season!

Loving Your Anthurium and Jasmine Plants

Known for its heart-shaped blooms, Anthurium is a hearty and beautiful plant that will thrive for years to come if cared for properly. These magnificent plants must be watered weekly, although they should be allowed to dry in between waterings. Yellowing leaves are telltale signs of over-watering. They thrive in high light but not direct sunlight. They need excellent drainage to avoid root rot and be sure to deadhead frequently to allow new blooms to grow and flourish. If the stems appear weak as they grow, feel free to use a stake to keep them upright and grow to their full potential.

Another plant we absolutely love this time of year is Jasmine, as it is one of the best plants to keep in your home for it’s herbal and healing properties. It is proven to reduce stress and tension and lessen the effects of depression. It has notably been used in historic medical treatments for liver disease and keeps the air clean and free of toxins.

These fragrant plants may require a bit of effort, but the results are well worth the work. Dwarf varieties of jasmine make excellent houseplants. They require even moisture and a sunny location in the home. Vines can also be brought into the home and the height is easy to manage with pruning or pinching in the dormant season. Potted plants do not have access to extra nutrients, so they need fertilizing twice annually. Your jasmine plant will flower in late spring into summer and provide the most intoxicating fragrance.

We carry both of these unique and amazing plants in a variety of sizes, call or stop by to find yours!
